Sandwiches are the big growth in US Foodservice

The US foodservice market is still the largest in the world, and although it may no longer be the trend-setter it once was, careful analysis of trends there can show how markets in the rest of the world will develop.

Takeaway sandwich chains are currently the fastest growing US food outlets, growing faster than both burger and pizza restaurants, according to new research from industry research consultancy Horizons.
London-based Horizons has been to the US studying growth patterns in restaurant chains and report fast food units selling subs – long submarine-shaped filled bread rolls – will lead the way in the predicted 5% growth in out-of-home food sales in the US in the next 12 months.

The research also reveals that at last US restaurant customers are becoming concerned with the health issues surround fast food and the “bad fats” content of fast food is now the No. 1 health issue.
